What is otoplasty?
Otoplasty, also known as cosmetic ear surgery, is a procedure designed to modify abnormalities in the ear cartilage to improve the appearance of the ears. Practiced in our clinic, one of the approved clinics in Tunisia, where the cost of the intervention is lower, otoplasty can be performed on young and adult patients.
Otoplasty In which cases is otoplasty performed?
Otoplasty Tunisia aims to change the shape, position or size of the ears, it allows to regain a harmony of the face. The procedure is generally performed on patients who are embarrassed by the remarkable distance between their protruding ears and their head, or on people whose one or both ears are deformed or asymmetrical due to a birth defect or following an injury.
Surgery of protruding ears in Tunisia
The most frequent otoplasty is the operation of the detached ears (cabbage leaf ears, cauliflower ears). The protruding ears are characterized by three malformations that are frequently associated with a defect of cartilage plication (the antelix), resulting in an absence of relief, a too important retro auricular angle or an hypertrophy of the cartilage. Surgery aims to correct these abnormalities.
Cosmetic ear surgery is possible at any age, but generally from the age of 7 to adulthood. In some special cases, surgery is possible in younger patients (5 years at the earliest). In very rare cases, when the child is born with malformed ears or with a significant defect, otoplasty can allow correction from birth.
Adults can be operated on at any age, but for children it is usually necessary to wait until the ear is growing properly. In addition, local anesthesia is more easily tolerated from the age of 7 years. It is also preferable to avoid the period of puberty in order to promote good healing.
Today there are new techniques of otoplasty without incisions, which consist of positioning permanent threads under the skin to shape the ears and give them the desired position. During the operation, a scar is made behind the ear and the cartilage is highlighted. The cartilage can be grated on the anterior side to soften it, and the retroauricular muscle can be resected. The cartilage (antelix) is then folded with threads and the concha is inserted.
The request for surgery should normally be a personal procedure regardless of age. Children are perfectly able to express their desire for surgery because of the mockery they are subjected to. The surgeon will then make sure that it is not a purely parental request.
